Understanding Child Development

Child development is monitored in stages that include pregnancy, delivery, infancy, toddlerhood, preschooler, and school-age.
One of the first assessments done on a  baby is soon after birth and is called the  APGAR score. At one minute and five minutes after birth, infants are checked for heart and respiratory rates, muscle tone, reflexes, and color of the skin. This helps identify babies that have difficulty breathing or have other problems that need further care. Screening at birth has helped to save countless lives and prevented disabilities in children so that they can improve their quality of life.

Learn About Developmental Disabilities

Developmental disabilities are a diverse group of conditions that affect cognitive, physical, communication, social, and/or emotional development. These limitations manifest during infancy or childhood as delays in reaching developmental milestones or as a lack of function in one or multiple domains of development. The brain and nervous system of the child develop from conception until 2 years after the baby is born. Any insult to this delicate system can result in developmental delay. Some of the developmental disabilities are:

Autism and Related Disorders

Intellectual
