Tamahar is a registered non- profit organization working in the field of childhood disability, specifically those with developmental disability due to brain damage.
Tamahar was started in 2009 by Mrs Vaishali Pai to provide assessment and rehabilitation services to children with special needs and support services to their families by providing affordable and quality developmental interventions appropriate to the mental age of the child and training the parents to be primary therapists.
Tamahar works with children, age 0 and up, who come from all socio-economic backgrounds; providing inter-disciplinary services to develop functional skills in a scientific manner over different developmental domains by training care givers as primary therapist and ensuring adequate emotional development in children by emphasizing on the child’s active participation in therapy. We have been working on a wide gamut of issues related to brain damage - Cerebral Palsy, Down’s syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Mental Retardation, Genetic Disorders such as Rett Syndrome, Lysosomal Storage Disorders and many more, using an array of validated, scientific principles.
Tamahar is a registered trust under the Income Tax Act, 1961, with 12AA (1) (b) (I)/80G (5) (VI) Tax Exemption Certification. Our work aligns with CSR norm activity (ii) of schedule VII as per Section 135 of the Companies Act, 2013 (“Promoting education, including special education & employment enhancing vocation skills especially among children, women, elderly & the differently unable & livelihood enhancement project”). We are also certified by the Ministry of Home Affairs to receive foreign funds (FCRA).
WHO’s Global Disability Action Plan 2014-2021 speaks about the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. We follow the concepts in the 11 programs that are conducted regularly at our center.
Our work aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals 3(Good Health and Well Being), 4(Quality Education), 8(Decent Work and Economic Growth) and 10(Reduced Inequalities). Our Founder-Director as well as Chief Operations Officers have completed, and have been certified by UN in, courses provided by the SDG Academy on working with children.
We have been audited and certified by two independent bodies in 2017 – Social Audit Network, India and Credibility Alliance. Both audits have adjudged Tamahar to be a transparent organization with good governance and also an organization effectively living up to its stated mission and vision of enabling children with special needs and their families to live a happy, healthy and dignified life.
